Social Security Disability benefits are available to those persons who are unable to engage in work due to a medical condition that is expected to last at least one year or result in death.  Because the Social Security system creates strict guidelines for eligibility and requires specific documentation of the applicant’s disability and financial means, a skilled social security lawyer can be incredibly helpful in navigating the application process.

At Ankin Law, our Chicago social security lawyers have considerable experience helping clients complete the Social Security Disability application process.  Our knowledgeable SSI lawyers understand the importance of adequately documenting your income and financial resources.

In order to be eligible for SSDI benefits, the following factors are examined:

  • Age at the time of disability
  • Number of work “credits” (or years of work experienced) prior to disability
  • Medical condition
  • Length of disability
  • Ability to perform the same or another kind of work

The social security system provides benefits to disabled persons under two separate, but similar, programs:

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides benefits to persons who meet the disability requirements and have worked long enough and recently enough to be “insured” for disability benefits.  SSDI may also be available for disabled widows and widowers, depending on their age at the time of their spouse’s death, and to adult disabled children on the social security account of their parent.  The amount of SSDI varies depending on the person’s previous contributions to the Social Security program.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are available to disabled persons who have limited income and resources.  The Social Security system places a cap on the amount of benefits a person can receive under SSI and the benefits may be reduced if there are additional sources of income for the disabled person.  Most SSI recipients are also eligible for Medicaid.

Whatever the stage of the social security disability claim process and whatever your specific disability, our proficient Chicago social security disability attorneys can advise you on the legal requirements and assist you with the claims process.  Contact one of our skilled Chicago social security disability attorneys at (872) 529-9377 to schedule a free consultation to discuss your social security disability claim.
